Komatsu Ltd. and ABB have
announced a strategic partnership to develop fully electrified mine
systems, targeting zero-emission operations by 2035. The collaboration
will integrate Komatsu's mining equipment with ABB's electrification and
automation technologies, creating a comprehensive ecosystem for
all-electric mines.
The
partnership will focus on developing high-power charging infrastructure
for battery-electric haul trucks, as well as energy management systems
that optimize power usage across mining operations. Renewable energy
sources, such as solar and wind, will be incorporated to supply clean
electricity to both the mine site and its equipment.
Initial
pilot projects are planned for copper and lithium mines in Sweden and
Canada, where access to renewable energy and supportive regulatory
frameworks make them ideal testing grounds. The companies aim to
demonstrate that all-electric mines can achieve comparable productivity
to diesel-powered operations while significantly reducing operating
costs and carbon footprints.
"Decarbonizing
mining requires more than just electric vehicles—it demands a holistic
approach to energy generation, distribution, and consumption," said a
Komatsu executive. "Together with ABB, we are building the
infrastructure and systems that will make the all-electric mine a
reality."
The
partnership also includes joint research into battery recycling and
second-life applications, ensuring that materials used in mine
electrification contribute to a circular economy.
